An ‘Alternative’ to Halloween

It’s that time of year when stores display their Halloween wares. Another marketing exercise to bring in the cash and dupe the unsuspecting. In amongst the ‘trick & treaststers’ will be found a ‘Christian’ ‘Alternative’ to the Halloween fun. It’s called a ‘Light Party’.

I thought the ‘Light Party’ was an idea thought up by local churches. But no. I discovered that it’s promoted by The Scripture Union as ‘A Christian alternative to Halloween‘.

Believe me, I applaud Christians that seek to reach children with the ‘light’ of the Gospel of Christ but I do not think it helps to call it an Alternative. I understand what they are trying to do, but frankly, I disagree. Here’s why.

Back in 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of Wittenburg castle causing (unintentionally) what we now call The Protestant Reformation. Unintended by Luther, but in the providence and good Grace of God we could argue The Reformation is the greatest revival in history. We still, today, enjoy the benefits of that great movement by the Spirit of God. What date did Luther nail his theses? 31st October, 1517. All hallows day. The 31st October is now widely accepted as ‘Reformation Day‘. This isn’t an alternative but a cause for celebration, reflection, thankfulness and challenge. It’s part of our heritage, it’s part of our history. We celebrate a mighty work of God.

Personally, I would like to see churches mark this day. If we were to teach the children about our heritage I’m sure it would be possible to celebrate with games and even a party. A party with meaning, with history. I am actually appalled to find the Scripture Union light party webpage ape Halloween. It’s ridiculous. Could we not come up with something better than an ‘Alternative’ that mimics the world. We should celebrate and remember what we have and not play catch up with the world. I don’t have a problem with having a party with the kids, but I do have a problem with the concept of Christian Alternatives. A few years ago I had arranged for Iain Murray to give a History Lecture and I remember him saying ‘ I didn’t think Christians were interested in history’. Thankfully many are, not too many though, but alternatives that actively ignore the history of the church are to say the least – unhelpful.
