Something from Nothing?

Something from Nothing. Is this possible!

In his latest book, The Grand Design, an extract of which is published in Eureka magazine in The Times, Hawking said: “Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist.” He added: “It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going.” (Telegraph)

It’s been said ‘why is there something rather than nothing’. Is a law nothing? Where does spontaneity come from? Could such a thing be repeated? Could a building – or even a speck of dust spontaneously come into existence? Is spontaneity a thing? Can it be measured? What conditions are required for spontaneity to take place? There’s no doubt, Stephen Hawking has an uber-intelligence, but his latest position on the existence of God is plainly wrong. It throws up more questions than answers. If he’s been searching for an answer that will placate his (possible) desire for the non-existence of God then maybe he’s found it.

Were there to have been a Big Bang, logically, there must have been a Big Banger. To me, it makes perfect sense for there to have been a creator. The questions raised are philosophical and theological. Scientifically, I’m assuming, it’s impossible to create a condition of nothingness. Even in a vacuum there is something, it’s called a vacuum. Even a vacuum in space is a vacuum in a place of existence called space. Is creation an act? It’s a doing word – who’s the doer or the banger?

I’ll stick with the Biblical account.

Gen 1:1  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Joh 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2  He was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3  All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Joh 1:4  In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

More on Steve Fuller

I find Steve intriguing: and this latest offering from his immense output is one I will be keen to read. For one thing it’s in my budget, and secondly I’m fascinated.

If he isn’t already, this book is going to bring him right into the firing line of the New Atheists. He knows exactly what he’s doing – I just hope for his sake the unintended consequences are ones he will be able to deal with and not have to prove through bitter experience the truth of the ‘Expelled’ movie.

Anyway the book is out – according to Amazon – 4th Nov 2010. Follow the picture link for more info.
