Keeping the 10 Commandments – Part 1

File:Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn 079.jpgDiving right into this one – who keeps the 10 Commandments? Do you? Do I? Does anyone you know keep them? Would you like to keep them? Do you try to keep them? Do you think we ought to keep them?

First off we ought to list them because I regularly come across statistics and comments that say even many Christians can’t say all 10.

So we all know what they are here’s a little revision for us all. The relevant passage in the Bible is in Exodus ch 20 verses 1 – 17 :

And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

  1. You shall have no other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those wholove Me and keep My commandments.
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
  5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

    1. Thanks for visiting the Blog. Interesting reply – to be honest not one I was expecting. Which ones do you find easier to keep?

      1. You shall not murder.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

,Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

You shall have no other gods before me…this are the ones that i strive for, the rest i bounce back….

i keep trying every time i fall. what about you which ones do you do well at?

        1. Again, I appreciate your honesty. My honest answer to you is that I break them all regularly – every moment of every day in fact. And so does everyone else. But that’s precisely why Jesus came as my substitute – the only person to keep them all. Otherwise why did He come at all?

If you read Chapters 5 – 7 of Matthews Gospel you will see that Jesus explains in a deeper way how the Commandments actually apply to our inward life as well. One purpose of the law is to show our sin to us that we might seek the Saviour, Jesus. You might also find it helpful to read Romans in the New Testament.

I’ll be doing a full post on this soon – but do come back to me.

          Regards, Mike

    2. When I see my failure I realize just how sinful I am and the more I see the relevance of Jesus dying for my sins, and the need to trust in Him for my salvation and righteousness!
