Is Christianity Probable?

Over the past months I’ve been listening to a number of discussions / debates between believers and non-believers and have been quite struck by the almost apologetic nature of the Christian in these discussions. I certainly do not believe we should be rude or abrasive in our discussions – but we ought to be firm and not let those that disagree with us so easily off the hook. Sometimes there just isn’t the time to get into a debate. But anyway, by apologetic in this instance I do not mean as a defense of the faith (apologetics) but in the ‘I really don’t want to be dogmatic about this, so I can’t tell you Christianity is absolutely true’ sense.

This is in direct contrast to a phrase Michael Robinson uses in his book ‘God does exist‘. He writes: ‘The believer is not to defend the faith with Probabilities’ (p. 92). It strikes me that this is exactly what many Christian apologists are doing, defending the faith with probabilities! Whether this is a deliberate charm offensive to win over the non-Christian or a particular methodology I’m not 100% sure. However, the obvious question to ask is this: why would anyone want to commit to a probability? If Jesus is only a probability I’m not interested.

In fact one person I greatly admire gave what was (IMHO) the completely wrong answer. I couldn’t believe it, when the non-Christian said  ‘ but you are assuming the very thing you are trying to prove!’. My first thought was ‘did he really say that?’ Greg Bahnsen uses the very same phrase to show how to completely disarm the unbeliever. Funny isn’t it, I never imagined anyone would actually use that phrase!! But they did. I was on the edge of my seat as it were in anticipation of the answer, but to my disappointment it didn’t come.

The answer that should have come was ‘of course, that’s right. If Jesus and the Word of God is my final authority then I will have to assume the thing I’m trying to prove or it wouldn’t be my final authority. And you do the same’ In fact as Bahnsen has said if I didn’t assume the thing I’m trying to prove something else would be my final authority.

The unbeliever assumes what he’s trying to prove as well. He assumes there is no God and ends up proving it. What a surprise! If he were to assume anything else he would be a believer. So all this talk of neutrality and intellectual credibility is just sheer nonsense. It’s a fiction, a facade or a lie, at best self-deception. Atheists seek to take the high ground supposedly of reason and neutrality but actually do neither. They use reason but can’t tell us how it’s grounded. They play the neutrality card but are anything but. What would be nice is some intellectual honesty.

So is Christianity probable? Absolutely not! Christianity is certain – it’s true. As I already said, why would anyone want to commit to a probability? If Jesus is only a probability I’m not interested.

Have popular scientists committed to a probability – no they haven’t. See the enthusiasm in their presentations. Is there really any suggestion they might be wrong? No. They have given themselves wholesale to rebellion against God and against His Christ. But thanks be unto God He still saves rebels. This is why Jesus came into the world, to save sinners and rebels.

Behind a Frowning Providence / dangers of correlation!

Citroën C3

Had a somewhat inconvenient situation this morning. A drive to Heathrow meant moving a couple of cars and I had to move my little Citroen C3 out of the garage. It’s the car I use for work. As I attempted to drive it out a terrible noise greeted me from somewhere under the front of the car. At first I thought it was a result of some work done on the car a few days ago. I took the car round to where the work was done and asked them to put it up on the ramp. The guys from Autolec couldn’t have been more helpful. This was after a 5 mph drive round the corner. Upon inspection both front springs had collapsed! O none side the spring had almost punctured the tyre and I could smell burning rubber as I limped along.

Parts of my suspension. The left spring exploded, taking all the bits with it.
Parts of my suspension. The left spring exploded, taking all the bits with it.

I discovered this at 5.30 in the morning and it couldn’t have been more convenient to say the least. Though at the time I had no idea what the problem was. As it turns out the connection or correlation I made between the problem and the cause (previous work on the car) was entirely wrong. We need to be careful about jumping to wrong conclusions because of a false correlation.

The other thing I had reinforced upon my mind and spirit was that if this had happened while driving to work – as it so easily could have – I probably wouldn’t be writing this now. The accident it could have caused would most likely have been fatal.

Atheists and skeptics may scoff – I care not – but I see in this the hand of my heavenly Father who for reasons only known to Him preserved my life, and actually has done so on many occasions. Thank you Lord Jesus.

And so as William Cowper (1731 – 1800) writes:

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

Go Here for the full hymn.

BTW, I drove to Heathrow in another car.

Christians Awake Salute the Happy Morn

P1030632
Worshiping the King of Kings this morning in Coventry

It was with great joy we attended Church this happy morn to celebrate the sending into the world of a Saviour – Christ the Lord.

We were treated to an excellent message appropriate for Christmas morning given by Pastor James and were exhorted through all the busyness of the Christmas season to make sure there is room for Jesus. He made comparisons between the pomp and greatness of Herod and a mighty Roman Empire and the silent almost imperceptible coming of the King of Kings. And although it seemed like Mary & Joseph and the birth of Jesus was at the behest of the rulers of the day – the reality is completely the opposite. We as Christians can take great encouragement that although events today may seem to militate against a sovereign God – again nothing could be further from the truth.

Two scriptures that illustrate this is Luke 17:20 ‘And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he (Jesus) answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:’

And Hebrews 2:8 ‘putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him (Jesus). Heb 2:9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

We opened the service with the singing of ‘Christians Awake‘.

Christians, awake, salute the happy morn
Whereon the Saviour of the world was born
Rise to adore the mystery of love
Which hosts of angels chanted from above
With them the joyful tidings first begun
Of God incarnate and the Virgin’s Son

Then to the watchful shepherds it was told
Who heard the angelic herald’s voice: “Behold,
I bring good tidings of a Saviour’s birth
To you and all the nations upon earth
This day hath God fulfilled His promised word;
This day is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord.”

He spake, and straightaway the celestial choir
In hymns of joy, unknown before, conspire
The praises of redeeming love they sang
And heaven’s whole orb with alleluias rang
God’s highest glory was their anthem still
Peace upon earth and unto men goodwill

To Bethlehem straight the shepherds ran
To see the wonder God had wrought for man
And found, with Joseph and the blessed Maid
Her Son, the Saviour, in a manger laid
Amazed, the wondrous story they proclaim
The earliest heralds of the Saviour’s name

Let us, like these good shepherds, them employ
Our grateful voices to proclaim the joy
Trace we the Babe, who hath retrieved our loss
From His poor manger to His bitter cross
Treading His steps, assisted by His grace
Till man’s first heavenly state again takes place

Then may we hope, the angelic thrones among
To sing, redeemed, a glad triumphal song
He that was born upon this joyful day
Around us all His glory shall display
Saved by His love, incessant we shall sing
Of angels and of angel-men the King

Wonderful words to praise Jesus.

Happy Christmas to you All.

The Killing III & Justice

the killing
Sarah Lund (Sofie Grabol)

I watched the final part of The Killing III last night. What an excellent series it has been. The acting has been superb and the story lines are worthy of all the accolades this series has received. All three series have reflected the times in which we live – corruption in high places and mistrust within the government . There’s also that cry, I think, from the public at large for there to be justice. Not something we seem to see much of. Those in high places usually get away with it. This is all unraveling over here (UK) over the late Jimmy Savile. It appears from what I can tell that his sexual abuse was well-known within the entertainment world but it was allowed to continue at worst, at best unofficial restrictions were placed on his activity. But all this is still to come out. And of course there will be a cry for justice. Sir Jimmy Savile was allowed to die with his public character intact even though those shell suits were a bit creepy. Will there, can there be justice for the victims?

Sarah Lund, the leading character and tenacious detective will not let go. And she does this, and has done this, at the expense of her own son and of her own relationships. She is a flawed character. But we admire here determination to uncover the truth and to see the perpetrator punished and receive justice.

blindfolded lady with sword in right hand held vertically down to floor, and a set of balance scales in her left hand held neck highThe kidnapper of the young girl is also after justice and it seems actually has no intention of harming the girl as long as justice is done. Although if he had managed to kill the murderer and abuser of his own daughter would he have let her go – it’s not clear. And like Sarah perhaps because of his own obsessive work ethic he too is a failed parent. He cannot get back the time he should have spent with his family but now he can at least find justice for his daughter – with the help of Sarah Lund.

And so with time running out the kidnapper takes them on a bit of a wild goose where he is eventually shot but with his dying breath reveals to Sarah where the girl is. Sarah makes the call and the girl is found, though there is a reluctance to follow Sarah anymore after her apparent blunder at interrogating the wrong person. The girl needs medical treatment but is OK.

It’s clear now who the murderer is of the kidnappers daughter and that it’s the man who Sarah saves from the hand of the kidnapper in an earlier episode. It also emerges this man has horribly murdered many young girls undercover of philanthropic work for a huge organisation that the government needs onside to get through the economic crisis. All the pieces are there to at the very least to question him again and this time to put him away for good and save other girls from a a sexual predator.

But there is too much at stake, both politically and economically and it looks like he’ll get away with it despite the attempts of the kidnapper and of Sarah. Then Sarah and this man are alone in the car. He confesses knowing that he will get away with it, protected by corrupt police, government officials and even the Prime Minister. Sarah gets out of the car, while her special branch partner shouts at her from a distance unable to stop what is unfolding. She walks round to where the man is sitting pulls out her pistol and shoots him in the head in the knowledge that justice will not come through the system. Sarah delivers summary justice of her own. She gives up all to protect future victims and fulfill her promise to the kidnapper to bring justice for the murder of his daughter.

Was Sarah right to become Judge, Jury and Executioner?  Of course not! That is supposed to be a matter for the State. The State doesn’t or shouldn’t take revenge it administers or is supposed to administer Justice.  We (UK) have a lot of high-profile cases going through the courts, some from many years ago with the one aim of gaining justice. There’s something in us – in me anyway – that cries out for justice. It can be a pained cry and Sarah delivers what we feel to be just. The man in the story should have been punished. We cry out whether we understand it or not for a righteous judge, for one that will deliver a true and right verdict on the guilty. And that day will come!

However, it’s easy to ask for it but who among us is 100% innocent?  Do we want justice as well. God knows all the facts, knows every motive, He sees all. He needs no Video playback. And Justice will be administered to us all!

But we praise God that He sent into the world a Saviour, a Rescuer, a Redeemer – His name is Jesus. Through Jesus we receive Mercy and Grace and Forgiveness no matter what our crimes. No matter what our crimes. If crimes are committed in this life the State administers justice – and rightly so – but the sword of justice fell on Jesus the innocent one that He might stand in the place of all that believe, on all those call upon Him for mercy that they might ‘go at last to heaven saved by His precious blood’.

This wasn’t supposed to be a ‘Christmas’ post but let’s remember why Jesus came into the world – to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

Rainbow Pictures from Wales

We just stopped off to pick a few things up from where my son and his family live and while in the house I heard the car horn honking. I thought what’s that. Went out the front door and my wife pointed across the fields. I grabbed my camera as quickly as possible and took these pictures before it faded. This is the view from their house across the valley.

BBC Question Time

Question Time (TV series)

Once again we see so clearly demonstrated the bias of the BBC on Question Time last evening. As usual Peter Hitchens is the lone voice ‘crying in the wilderness’ for the rest of the panel to ‘tut tut’ at. There are a lot of us out here that really do appreciate his public stand on these issues – and I think they know it. He’s not so alone as the BBC and other overbearing commentators like to make out. One example on this is the EU – where’s the Referendum I was promised! The Government would lose and so we can’t have a vote!

I slightly disagreed with Peter’s view on the status of the Gay Marriage issue – though it’s not really about that it’s about authority. It’s either our own ‘autonomous authority’ as superbly demonstrated by Will Self or God’s. Gay Marriage is a huge issue because it represents a quickly growing and already very powerful anti-Christian mindset. This is what we have seen in the US. But beware, there’s always a trade off. Once Christian standards have gone what will be left?

Will Self last night seemed to be saying that it doesn’t matter what you believe, so on his own worldview it’s perfectly acceptable to disagree with him. But when you do disagree he doesn’t like it. Yet he doesn’t have a leg to stand on and neither did any of the others whose whole ethos is summed up by being ‘nice’ yet actually believing in nothing.

I can’t understand how Will Self can be professor of ‘Contemporary Thought’ at Brunel University – well actually I can. Contemporary thought is to just call anyone that disagrees with you as either  Homophobic or Racist, but usually both. Maybe a Bigot as well. All three if you are a Christian. This is what Will Self so blatantly did last night to Peter within the space of about 10 minutes called him a ‘Homophobe’ and a ‘Racist’ and not a complaint from anyone on the totally ‘balanced’ panel or from the esteemed Dimbleby.

Peter painted a gloomy picture of where this country is heading with regards to the persecution of Christians to cackles and laughter of both panel and the majority of the audience. There was one brave lady in the audience that presented an opposing Christian perspective and I was surprised by the clapping of the audience but there was no support for her from the panel (apart from Peter). It’s the Establishment that want the perception of morality without the objective standards that only the Bible can bring.

Peter also demonstrated why voting Conservative now is no longer an option. I think we have a good MP but he belongs to a party that has seriously lost its way.

Cranmer: Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have made a foetus.

Missed this from about a week ago – well worth a read. Brilliant stuff as usual.

He writes in the last paragraph: ‘At this stage, surely, it is a non-person, just like the other 201,931 non-persons who last year were evacuated from wombs in England, Scotland and Wales.’

Patrick Moore meets his maker

Sir , English astronomer

BBC News – Sir Patrick Moore, astronomer and broadcaster, dies aged 89.

Some years ago when I lived for a time in Bishops Castle we saw Patrick going into the Three Tuns. My friend called out ‘are you alright there Patrick’ With a wave Patrick disappeared into the pub. He was obviously a real character. As I recall however, he was also very anti Christian. Sadly he has now gone to give an account before his creator – as we all must.
